What a pleasure it is to find this site. My love of local history was fueled by your writings as I grew up in Nederland in the 50s-70s. I now am researching and writing on family history and early East Texas history. I also have a website for this info: http://www.hamcomm.com/ancestry Thanks for all your work and for making this information available via the Internet. Best wishes, Dave Hamerly

Hi WT,

I am resident of Cameron Parish and read your article in the Cameron Pilot. I have two web pages that also involve the "history" of Cameron Parish residents; just not on the same "note" as your wonderful writings. I have only touched base on this great page but plan to spend more time on it tomorrow...My husband and I are Civil War fanatics, in a sense of the word. Husband has read almost every article, book and other writings regarding that era of our history. I wrote a poem called, "If We'd Been There" and will share with you asap. Please go visit my web pages at http://member.aol.com/KDezamo/index.htm Great Page you've got here. Kaye

Hello Mr. Block. My name is Amber Collins and in one of your articles you mentioned that the "Kaiser Burnout" was an attempt to rid the Big Thicket of one of it's jayhawking bands. I was curious if you could confirm whether that band was made up of Collins'. I am researching my family history, and it seems that the Collins' of Hardin County are not easy to track down. If you could help me with any info regarding the Collins clan, including Warren Collins, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time. I can be reached at acollins99@hotmail.com or Rt. 3 Box 88D, Dayton, Tx. 77535.

Dear Mr. Brock, My name is Vicki Burkhardt. I encountered your interesting Web site while doing an internet search for information on church budgets. I am curious about how much it costs to operate a church similar in size to mine. My church has about 600 adult members plus numerous children. There is no mortgage on the current church buildings and land. We are buying land on which to build a larger church but our building fund is experiencing slow growth. I suspect that my church pays too much in operating costs. $47,000+ per month seems excessive. Budget information for 1998 presented at our annual church meeting in January doesn't specify the budget for items such as salaries, staff benefits, travel, maintenance, utilities, land payments, etc. In my limited experience with financial statements, I have never seen so little detail on the operating costs of any business entity. A friend who is a member of my church's board of directors will supply me with a operating budget this coming Saturday when he comes to dinner. I hope the detail is sufficient to answer my rather basic questions. In order for me to give a fair and reasonable assessment of the financial management of my church, it would be helpful to have at least a ballpark idea of what other churches spend for their operations and programs. Based on what I have read on your Web site, you are a learned man with an interest in and knowledge of church operations and histories. I wonder if you could help me. How much does it cost to operate churches of various sizes? Are there sources of this information available to the public? Any information you'd be willing to supply would be greatly appreciated and would be held in the strictest confidence. Thank you for reading this rather lengthy comment. I hope to hear from you, realizing of course that you may be too busy to involve yourself with another person's research. Very sincerely, Vicki Burkhardt 1029 Ellingson Lane Austin, Texas 78751 VBurkhardt@email.msn.com

Mr. Block,

I really enjoyed your site and plan to come back often. My grandfather and great-grandfather both worked for Miller Vidor Lumber Co. My great-grandfather, Benjamin Van Dorn Stephenson, was killed on the job there. My grandfather, Wallace Stephenson, worked in the office there and also served as a railroad engineer for the trains that hauled the lumber out. Stephensons were active in Vidor politics, too. Do you cover much Vidor history in any of your books? If so, I would love to get one for my mother. Thanks for your hard work and devotion to the task.--Hugh Poland

Hi..I'm from Lake Charles, LA and looking for good information on Jean Lafitte (or Laffite ?). Ran across your articles and really enjoyed them. My husband is a professional artist and sculptor and asked me to look for research material on Lafitte, but what we really wanted was pictures...drawings, engravings etc. that would give a good likeness of him. How tall was he, how did he dress, etc. These are what we're looking for. If you can refer me, I'll look for another source if you don't have this.

Cordially, Pat Louviere

I love history and have always been enthralled by writings of great authors like W. T. Block.

I am reading all of the articles of this site and I enjoy the stories of the Wild people in Hardin County, the Slave lady who was the first woman executed in Texas, The history of the Beaumount Enterprise and other Texas papers, The stories of the McFaddins and other Texas cattlemen on cattle drives with thousands of animals on the trail drives to New Orleans, The rough men who hired themselves to the cattlemen to swim their cattle across the rivers and here I am telling you about the stories, when you know and love them all too.

Please excuse me but I have just discovered W. T's stories and I am so grateful that his works have been made available on this internet site.

Dear Mr. Brock, I am a 7th generation Houstonian and have been doing research on my Houston ancestors. My grandfather, Thomas Cary Copping was the owner of several ocean-going boats in Houston in the early 1900's In a 1950 interview with him by the Houston Chronicle, he claims to have brought the Port Arthur whale to Harrisburg where he put it on exhibition. The article in the Houston Chronicle is posted at my website at: http://members.tripod.com/~quikquip/Copping.htm I have also found a picture of the whale in a book titled Houston A Historical Protrait by John L. Davis. This book reports that the whale was carried to Allen's Landing in Houston by Capt. Plummer. When I found this book, I was intrigued to know the "truth" about this "whale of a tale". Did Capt. Plummer work for my grandfather and did my grandfather own the pilot boat "Florida"? If anyone knows more about this story, I would love to hear from them.

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading your stories. Thanks so much for posting them on the internet.

Dear Mr. Block , Great News we have just received conformation on the Civil War Gunboat Dan from University of Southern La. Archeological Team. Under their direction we have be documenting and researching this site for 2 years. We just received official notice from the University that the wreck is confirmed as the Confederate Civil War Gunboat Dan. The members of T.A.S.A. (Texas Archeological Study Association) and myself want to say thank you for helping us with information you have provided about the wreck and whereabouts. We are presently compiling a report for (THC), (USL) and US Naval Department Historical Research Center in Washington D.C. Iwant to say how much you and Mr. Bill Quick have meant in providing information and history on these sight. THC will dive with our team on what we beleive to be the Morning Light on the 12 of December. Also looking for other sights arround Orange Texas with La.

P.S. You lit the torch we will keep it burning!!!! Steve Hoytt is working close with us in these operations. Watch the Mail its on it's way.

One Ship we are puzzled about? The Annie Taylor Schooner that went down near Sabine Pass, A Lt and 9 union soldiers were rescued by the Ship Mobile found the records in the Groves Library great suggestion and they have a great reference.
